Sir,

I have the honour to report that on Thursday the 14th. December the first congregation for the conferring of Degrees was held at the Hongkong University and to enclose for your information a newspaper account of the proceedings. There are a few points in connection with the occasion to which I would call your special attention.

The President of China was graciously pleased

to send a message of congratulation and encouragement. The Vice- -Chancellor was able to announce that Mr. Ho Fook had added to his previous benefactions by promising a sum of 850,000 towards the erection of a new school of Physiology.

The Civil Governor of Kuangtung come down in

a Gunboat from Canton on purpose to attend the ceremony.

You will observe that in addition to the

ordinary graduates, the University conferred an honorary degree in absentià on Sir Frederick Lugard the first Chancellor and honorary degrees on 5 gentlemen 2 of them Frenchmen and 3 Chinese who have distinguished themselves in literature and science. It was hoped to confer honorary degrees on Sir James

Stewart Lockhart, K.C.H.G., Mr. R. F. Johnston, Mr. Cecil
